• Stanford University is named after Leland Stanford Junior. It is located in Stanford, California which neighbors Palo Alto. The university was started by Leland Stanford and wife Jane Lathrop Stanford in 1885. Leland Senior was a practicing lawyer in Wisconsin before he migrated to California. In 1852, having lost his law library and other property to a fire, Stanford followed his five brothers to California during the California Gold Rush. He went into business with his brothers and became the keeper of a general store for gold miners. He later became a wholesaler.
