Hello,
Yesterday I had some posts that generated a particularly interesting response and I got a few good responses and not one person disagreeing with me. So although I love bragging rights...that has to do with the fact that there is something wrong with the freelance artist population as a whole.
I do not feel that it would be fair to compare a 20 yr freelance veterans price to that of someone who just arrived on the scene. I also do not feel it would be fair to undermine an inexperienced persons creative ability or talent, but there are simply too many artists out there selling themselves too cheap. This really really really affects those of us who are not new to our respective industries and since were the veterans, we its up to us to do something about it. DISCLAIMER: Im not making any claims as to my talent or experience. There are many out there more talented and experienced than myself so I hope Im not being condescending...but that doesnt sideline the obvious. If the serious talent in this region bands together to enforce minimum pricing guidelines (BUT VERY FAIR ONES) then I think we can come out of this crisis (there, I used the word), in a formidable position.
So.....if youre reading this.....and youre a freelance artist....send me your contact information so that I can put together a list and figure out some way of uniting us so that we can at least share some ideas in a productive way.
Note...I understand the economy is shot and Im not asking anyone to give me a penny to organize a thing. What Im asking for is your support to support a meeting of some sort amongst ourselves. I dont claim to have all the ideas, and this is certainly something that I couldnt organize by myself.
Personally, I have no idea where to begin...but I feel its important for all of us to communicate amongst ourselves and see how many are willing to band together for common goals. Obviously, we could set goals once were stronger in numbers and actually sit down and talk about it. One thing is certain, there are some negative feelings towards employers on behalf of freelance artists.
As both a freelance graphic designer and a photographer, I see that it IS a problem and I think there IS something that we can do about it.
If youre interested in expressing your support, please let me know, Ill write your contact details and do the work to get us together.
Kind Regards,
Diego
